The features on this project were hit and miss for me. On the tracks where he was rapping however, he was pretty solid. He was a little bit corny with some of his lyrics towards the end of the album, as they were sappy, romantic tracks. It sounded like a beat that would have actually come off the “Rodeo” album that Travis Scott put out in 2015. I was surprised to hear that new trap sound on “Fish N Grits” from Wale which featured Travis Scott. Then went back to his rapping on “Mathematics” and “Fish N Grits”, only then to switch up to a romantic vibe. Then he switched it up to that summer vibe/Caribbean sound for four songs. He started with his soulful and grande production that he raps on, which is what I love most from Wale. The production and flow of this project changes up a lot on this album. He talks about cocaine and personifies it as a white woman and describes them as both ruining lives and being in his life for a while now. It also needs to be said that what he did on “CC White” was really interesting too. Don’t tell anyone, but Wale did this better on his first try than Drake did. People will definitely be critical of Wale for trying to go down the road that Drake has. I just don’t think he did the greatest job of it mostly because this is his first time experimenting this type of sound. It seemed like Wale was going for the summer vibe feel, which isn’t bad thing. Even the song “Fine Girl” which featured Major Lazer and Wizkid was a pretty good song. Wale at least made these tracks sound authentic I will give him that. He also had two of Nigeria’s biggest Afro-pop artists, Davido and Olamide, on the track “Fine Girl”. I like how he got J Balvin, a reggaeton artist from Colombia, to feature on the song “Colombia Heights (Te Llamo)”. With that being said, tracks like “Colombia Heights (Te Llamo)” and “Fine Girls” are really cool to listen too. “DNA” is him talking for the entire song and then the chorus he is singing about him giving this woman “good dick and advice”. Towards the end of the album, songs like “Heaven On Earth” and “My PYT” sounded like the same track about some girl that he loves. However, I hopped on to this sound when I was really hoping he wasn’t going to. Now granted, it isn’t like those tracks were bad, they really weren’t. He started having this Caribbean vibe on some tracks, and there went the rap album I was hoping for. These are Wale songs that I love to hear from him. Listening to the first few songs, I am starting to like this album a whole lot. Especially after his last album “The Album About Nothing” I thought that was one of the best albums of the year in 2015. My expectations for Wale are always high I have him as a top 5-10 rapper in the game today. He has been quiet since 2015, so I could only assume that he cooking up something good. What else could the man do to impress you? Anyways, as a Wale fan I am interested as to how this album is going to sound. I mean damn, he did an album with Jerry Seinfeld. When you talk about the top-tier rappers in the game today, Wale’s name is never mentioned which is extremely odd to me. This man has been in the game for a minute now, and I feel as if everyone underrates him. Wale, rapper from Washington, D.C., dropped his fifth album.
